Dear reader. Please sit down, relax and take a deep breath…
Now, ask yourself the question of questions:
What are the most important things in life?
Think about that for a moment and then start reading. Your life might never be the same…
We all move through life differently
Some prefer to do as little as possible, others live at full speed.
What all of us have in common though, is that we spend our time on something. Have you ever thought about how you spend your time and why?
Ask yourself these two fundamental questions:
- What are the 3 things you spend most of your time on?
- What are the main reasons why you spend your time in this way?
We don’t know where we’re going
The reason the above questions are so valuable is that moving doesn’t mean we’re going in the right direction.
Ask yourself the following questions to see if you too find some truth in this:
- Do you know what you want in life and if yes, what do you want?
- Do you sometimes feel you don’t have time to do what you really want to?
- Do you sometimes do things not because you want to but because of others’ expectations or to fit in?
- Have you ever gone through a mid-life crisis or know someone who has?
- Have you ever continued a relationship with someone even though it wasn’t good for you?
- Have you ever spent lots of time working, exercising, or doing something else that you later realised wasn’t all that important?
We can’t always know what’s right for us. But do remember; moving doesn’t mean we’re going in the right direction.
Even though we can never know for sure what the right direction is, it’s helpful to spend time thinking about our direction, trying to understand ourselves and what we want out of this life of ours.
Perhaps we should even dear asking ourselves the question of questions:
What are the most important things in life?
The four most important things in life are….
This tree in Namibia could certainly be the tree of life. It’s about 10 meters wide!
Below I’ll outline the things I believe are the most important in life for almost every human being alive. Yes, we’re all different, but just as we all need air and water there are certain other things we all need too.
The way I define “life” is pretty simple:
“Life is the ability and time we have to interact with, and experience the world”. Check out this post for more on the matter.
The underlying assumption my life-view is based on is:
“Living a great life means interacting with the world in a way that gives us meaning and positive emotions without causing harm.”
With that in mind; here’s my model of the four most important things in life:
As you can see from the model above I believe “health”, “relationships”, “positive self-view” and “purpuse, values and dreams” are the four most important things in life.
Take care of your health
“Health is life. Care for it as you would care for your newborn child.”
Poor health will both reduce the time you have in this world and your capability to live the life you want to live. Therefore, if we want to live for a long time with a mind and body that can take us where we want, we must take care of our health.
I’m not saying life can’t be good if we’re sick, disabled or have other health challenges. I’m saying that people would like to feel capable of living the way they value and to live for a long time. Health, consequently, is absolutely fundamental.
Unfortunately, most of us only realize the importance of health when it’s gone. That’s a great shame. The good thing is that we’re capable of influencing our health and it’s easier than most people think.
Check out this link for a model that describes the key drivers of health and what to do to become healthy.
Invest in your relationships
“Spend quality time with the people you love and the relationships will grow stronger. Don’t, and they’ll slowly fade away.”
My friend Ivi and I taking care of our friendship at a party!
When talking about life we’re used to hearing ourselves and others say that the most important thing in life is family and friends. It’s hard to disagree and the evidence supporting this is overwhelming. What’s not as well understood is how to invest in our relationships to make them flourish and grow.
The above is likely one of the reasons why we see so many people divorce, why the time we spend with our friends steadily declines as we age and why many of us spend more time in-front of the TV or computer than we spend with our kids.
Personally, I don’t think these things happen because we want them to. I think they happen because we don’t allow ourselves the time to reflect on what really matters and consequently we’re not fully aware of the impact small choices we make in our day-to-day lives have on our relationships. In order to have good relationships I believe we need to both spend a considerable amount of time with the people we love and be really present during that time.
Check out this post to read about the key skill you need to build great relationships in life.
Install a positive view of yourself
“How we view ourselves is the foundation on which our life is built.”
When we don’t have a positive self-view we typically compare ourselves with other people, feel insecure about ourselves and are too sensitive to the opinion of others. We also tend to make choices based on other people’s expectations rather than do what truly feels right for us.
Having a positive self-view on the other hand means accepting ourselves for who we are and what we believe in. It means having the courage necessary to make our own decisions and to live life the way that’s right for us.
I realized not long ago that I’ve lived most of my life without having a strong enough self-view. Only during the last few years have I been able to understand and accept myself to the degree where I very rarely feel “below” anyone or feel afraid to say things I believe because of other people’s judgment. I still have improvement areas however, especially with regards to dealing better with negative feedback and rejection.
How you think is one of the key factors that influence the view we have of ourselves. Learn about the four components of thinking and how to think effectively here.
Your hair might be long, even red so-help-me-god. Who cares? Be yourself.
Live your purpose, values and dreams
“Reflecting on what kind of person you want to be and what you want out of life will increase your understanding of yourself. Living according to this understanding will give you a sense of purpose, fulfilment and peace.”
Being healthy, having great relationships and a positive self-view is wonderful. But who’s the “you” in you? What makes you different to everyone else?
Let’s talk about purpose, values and dreams.
Your life-purpose
Your life-purpose is a clearly stated, high level description, of what you want to do with your life.
Understanding your purpose is a journey that requires time and reflection. I feel I’ve only understood my own life-purpose reasonably well for a few years and for all I know my life-purpose might change in the future. Here’s my current purpose:
The purpose of my life is to feel good, be good and do good.
Why are you here on Earth? What’s your purpose?
Your values
Values are the thoughts and behaviours that define how you want to be as a person.
The following analogy is a good way to understand values:
Picture yourself being in a boat. You’re sailing at night and the sea is rough. Unfortunately for you, the weather is horrible and you don’t know if you’re steering the boat in the right direction. Suddenly you see a lighthouse straight ahead! You quickly steer the other way and get yourself, the boat and your crew out of danger.
Values can act as lighthouses or guiding stars like the Northern Star. Values help you become aware of when your thoughts and behaviours aren’t alligned with the kind of person you want to be, just as a lighthouse make you aware of where to sail. Consequently, values can help you make better decisions in life.
Here are four values I love:
- Love
- Live
- Learn
- Inspire
It’s important that your values are closely aligned with your life-purpose. As for your life-purpose, understanding what your values are is a journey that requires time and reflection.
What are the words that define how you want to think and behave?
Your dreams
Dreams are things you want to experience in life.
Want to travel the world? Want to become a world-class teacher? Want to make the world a place where every creature is treated with respect? I know I do.
Dream a little every day. Think about what you’d like to do, see, think, feel and so on. Don’t let your current as-is situation define what you dear hoping for.
Dreams exist to be pursued! Many dreams do come true and the more positive your self-view is the easier it will be for you to achieve your dreams. Read about how to discover your dreams here.
Spitzkoppe in Namibia is a place where dreams are born
The four most important things in life are highly interdependent
Health. Relationships. Self-view. Purpose, values & dreams.
All of these influence one another. For example, how healthy you are affects the energy and time you have available to spend on the other three.
Your self-view affects your mental health, how you interact with people and to what degree you “allow” yourself to live your purpose, values & dreams and so forth.
Improvement in any one of these areas will consequently not only have an impact in that area but the other areas as well.

I’ve borrowed the lighthouse picture from here. Thank you.
Wow, a very deep and thought provoking post, really appreciate it. I agree that these are the 4 most important things in life, it all boils down to happiness, health, wealth and relationships for me :) btw, I have many of the same mentors/influencers as you :)
Gwen,
Thanks for your nice comments and interesting to hear that we have many of the same influencers! I agree wealth is very important, though more more as a means to and end, not an end in itself. WOuld you agree?
Wow, what an incredible article. While reading it I could feel the efforts you made throughout your life to understand what is truly important for you. It’s really enriching as we share the same point of views. The difficulties I meet with self-improvement sometimes is the ability to mentally draw a clear map of the most important things for me in life. Having a structured article such as yours will help me a lot to remember what my values are and what I do want for myself, my friends and my family.
Thank you for sharing your really interesting ideas.
Nathan
Thanks a lot for your kind words Nathan! You’re right too, I have spent many, many hours reflection and talking to people about these things and it feels great to share the results with you :)
We all need enough money, without that it can be difficult to enjoy the other things in life but for me wealth is not on my list.
I would add – to make sure that the most important people in my life know how much I care about them, whatever that takes and to give them any help they need if it is something I can possibly give.
absolutely right
I would agree Stephanie. Personally, I find it harder than it sounds. It’s easy, at least for me, to fall back into habits where I forget to put my people first and it’s something I work on. Sometimes knowing what to do is easy but doing it consistently over a long period of time is hard.
Stephanie, most all western women in particular would agree with you and yet, you are incorrect. I have travelled the world and experienced most everything culturally however not to be arrogant nor unkind.
The world is full of nice people and exciting cultures. I’ve found that an open mind an heart is essential to learn, appreciate and contribute while traveling.
YEA!!!!!!!!
Stephanie,
First you say “for me wealth is not on my list” and then you go on to say “the most important people in my life know how much I care about them, whatever that takes and to give them any help they need if it is something I can possibly give”. That can be seen as a contradiction. If money is not on your list but want to give your loved ones what you can, you are limited to those things that money cannot buy. Many important things to our physical survival are physical things like a roof over ones head, food and clothing. Without money it is almost impossible to provide even these basics. Unless yous are able to build a house from scratch, and without money, grow all your own food, also without any money, and make clothes, also without money. A near impossible task for any one of these things. Which is why most of us go to school to learn a trade and get a job for money or create a business and maybe make money if you are a very hard worker, talented in getting people to do your bidding, have a viable product, are able to compete with similar businesses and are also lucky. There are other things, like security and health care. To be able to be sure of doing the basics you need security and health first. The things I have listed are what are the most important things to everybody. Saying you care for someone without those things makes ones words empty. After you have all of the above only then you can start talking about anything else that seems to be important. But remember, those other things are secondary to the list above. Also to be able to do all of those things, one needs power to get around and do all of those things in an efficient manner. Without power you are able to barely subsist. This is why there is the fight over pollution as caused by burning too much fossil fuels. An example of what happens with burning too much fossil fuels is the cities in China where it is very difficult to breath the air. This is why is the fossil fuel fight is about. Currently there are other methods of energy production that are being developed but are less than ideal because they are not available around the clock., such as photo voltaics and wind. Low energy nuclear reaction (LENR) is ideal and is being developed and is ready for market by some companies. However the competition from fossil fuels is holding back their availability. So the most important thing to do currently is to stop fossil fuel interests from slowing down the availability of LENR.
There are so many ways to show love, give love.without any Money!….just being there for someone is quite often enough.
AMAZING!

you forgot about cars, jobs perfumes tv video games and books. Without those modalities you would be 7 years under banjan tree sitting Buddah. Boring uninspiring and sheeyt like British say it.I forgot alcohol and cigarets.
Hi,
Sitting under a tree all day isn’t really for me, although doing so every now and then is a good thing I think.
In my opinion ; the most important factors in our life is UNDERSTANDING , ACCEPTANCE AND COMPLIENCE
if we understand properly that all beautiful things and elements surrounding us (including myself) has no permanency and perishable
then we must accept it gracefully and honorably as long as we live, therefore comply with our daily life as we feel most reasonably fit.
You sound like a ” yes man”
Important things
When you don’t know what to do then do the most sensable thing
If you are working or living with a control freak leave ( control is not respect)
Don’t let people get you into criminal activity or put your life in danger.
Keep way from those do.
Focus and identify most important things
Right location right partner right job good friends good values respect
good interests to complement good health ie outdoors medititation yoga learn a musical insturuement and second language
Get rid of people who belittle you ( to make them to look good) and people who are toxic in there relationships
Don’t worship money aim to live within your means
Don’t smoke gamble be promiscuous drink heavily or take illicit drugs
Keep away from people who do
Take responsibility for your actions
Right on! You helped me more then the article I read above. Thank you
Nikki…glad it was useful for someone
….may the sun” smile for you”
Allan
What I have written is about “setting
boundaries”…. This way if you
opperate within well defined boundaries ….
You will live a life with less stress and trouble than if did not have these.
You need to believe in yourself understand your strengths and weaknesses….and your gifts…
You may be very creative… Very scientific…or very articulate…plus more…be guided by this in your career selection and where you choose to live etc etc
Yes “acceptance” can be hard to do however it’s needed after grief loss to move forward…
You can “accelerate your wisdom ” from others mistakes and from others experiences….
Humble I love it!
Thanks Alivia. :)
our outlook here, and although I also think the original post is basically right, and I , too , identify with it, I think yours is more complete in the way of knowledge , wisdom , and understanding; freedom, justice, equality , food-clothing-shelter, love-peace-happiness!! That’s very well put. How did I come upon this site? Well, it’s Christmas day, and my 15 yr old son opened his gifts ……and is now playing his pro. keyboard. I worked hard to provide the most awesome holiday that I could. But, it turned out so well, and events in my life have been such, that it’s given me testimony of the existence of a loving God. So many things could have been better for me, had my parents not been strung-out on booze and valium, and been as emotionally insensitive, jealous and woman- hating, as they had been. My self knowledge was really hindered as a result of this, and after having worked like a dog for 47 years, ( Im 56 ) I reflected, and googled…“ what is most important in life“……The above first post, and this one I mentioned, are all I needed to read , to prompt me to ask myself how Im dealing with just those things. I know what it is, or might feel like, to have been adopted, and have no idea of my roots, or who my real parents were…..although I was not adopted, or left in a basket somewhere and found, I nonetheless felt that distanced from my very own parents, and in fact, if I had known all of the answers that I doggedly uncovered after intensely persevering, in order to get to the root of the dysfunction, and determine what caused them to be the unusual people they were, and decipher just how justified their abuse was, and if, in fact, that I had deserved it. Well, I had to prove to myself that I was capable…I had to delve into psychology books, jobs, groups, and all the vissisitudes of life as a result to produce experience that I could find identity in. I always believed in Christ. When things were beyond my control, as they often were, the only hope that I could imagine out of the gross chaos, was to prey….now, and especially today, being Christmas ( although I know others have thier own belief system, and set of ethics) I know that there is a kindly force that has protected me, and that many of my prayers, have in fact , come to be…not always exactly how I asked, and not neccesarily all at once…but I found that, despite the things in this materially-focused environmont that I did not have, in fact, I do have so very much to be grateful for….and how imperative it is to aknowlege that everything we have ( and of course Computers and cell phones, were not part of the picture while I was growing up ) yes, all we have that sustains us is wisely “on lease“ to us, and how strongly our very thoughts , and how we view the things provided for us by the cosmos, and utilize them, has bearing on the way we stagnate or progress. For those who have never suffered, it might sound insignificant to ones livlihood, but the old saying:“ don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone“……many of us have so very much, already, and I dont mean to ramble. The book that’s helped me get my head together like nothing else, is Kahlil Gibrans’ “ The Prophet“ It’s amazing, and it gave me profound insight, and solace…..this having direct bearing, on what is most important in life…its also a concise little book, and its free online….just google.
Thanks for the book recommendation and I’m glad things turned out well for Christmas :-) Personally, I was far away from my family this Christmas which wasn’t great. Christmas is family time!
That’s 12
Thanks for such valuable things given so simple………..
Thank you Archana!
I have been following this thread for a couple years now. When I first commented I was very internal in my search. Now I am thinking more globally and am trying to put this question in the arena of ISIS. This definition doesn’t seem to encompass the idea of truth that causes a person to strap a bomb onto one of their own followers and kill him as a tool to kill and maim a bunch of little girls they never even met after a concert in northern England. It seems so cowardly and worthless yet they seem to want to claim they are doing it to be true and faithful. Do they value their youth so lightly that a random target is worth what they are sacrificing or is the target just their own inflated egos and the death and carnage is just incidental to them? How does truth relate to a death cult like ISIS?
“Life is the ability and time we have to interact with the world”.
So simply and eleganty stated!
A great post. Loved reading and reflecting upon your ideas! :)
Thank you Rita, I really appreciate that :)
Great lack of femal inspirers…….
It is true that I’ve read more litterature made by men but this is not a concious decision. There are a few women on the list though. However you’re making a good point. Do you have any recommendations for me Sofia?
Wonderful article. Really brings things into perspective.

As I seek answers in my own life, I was blessed to find this wonderful post from you. Your travels and experience are greater than my own and, therefore, provide a broader perspective and truth. Thank you for the help I achieved from this post. You have another friend and follower. Kindly, John Colorado, USA
John, thank you for such an inspirational and touching message. I sincerely appreciate it and wish you the best of luck. Hoping to hear more from you! :)
What about God. What about Jesus.

Million,
Thanks for your comment. When writing this post I decided against including religion as a specific component. Instead, I reasoned that the “Purpose, Values and Dreams” part would cover religious beliefs for those who hold them important.
All the best,
Bjarte

Wow, thank you. I move back to NL tomorrow to peace together my life again after a marriage breakdown. This will help to keep focus. Dank je wel!
Susan, thank you for your kind words. I hope you’re doing OK. Do not hesitate to contact me if there’s anything I can do to help. I’m sure you’ll come out of this just fine :)
Bjarte I am Polish and hate you artificial shmoosing peoples online whom you never met. It seems unreal to me. Why would you want to discuss values and meaning of life that at this age are obvious for most of the socialistic Europeans and Americans with access to satellite TV.
I am Polish that read Erich From Fukujama, and other few philosophers. I like Fukujama. I don’t understand you. Is there some celestial new awarness we here don’t dig. Please awaken me little lost soul.
Hi my Polish friend,
Poland is embarrasingly still on my “countries to visit” list. I’ve wanted to visit for a long time, but still haven’t done it. For example, I hear Krakow is beautiful.
With regards to your comment: I haven’t read Erich yet so I can’t comment on what he and I may or man not have in common.
I want more out of my life even though I am helping others. I want to volunteer to do something with meaning and satisfaction. I’m retired but still young physically and mentally. . Young. I volunteer for my church working on the websites and other activities, but it’s not fulfilling my soul.
Bonnie, thanks for your comment and I think it’s nice that you spend time helping others.
What is it in your life that has truly inspired you in the past? And what are your dreams for the future?
its really wonderful and encouraging
Thanks a lot Daniel :-)
Hi Bjarte, Wonderful post read after so many days. Great :-) I created my own blog about how important our life is, tell me do you like my wordings too, it will inspire me lot.
Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words Rupali. I will take a look at your blog :)
Hi, Bjarkte you really touch into my life for the wonderful post, sometime we blind the way we move in our every day life, but according to your post some people may change their life through this guidance. I am expect to read the new blog.
Thank you
Thank you very much for your nice comment Julius.
We can definitely change the direction of our lives. Looking forward to hear more from you :)
Just a quick question, I came on to this site for some guidance and I completely agree with you, these are very important things in life. I’m a bit stuck though, it seems that my dreams come in conflict with my relationships with family and friends. It involves me moving to a foreign country to live, quite possibly for the rest of my life. I want to follow my dreams but I risk sacrificing many relationships and I may never truly belong in this new country or have the same relationships I do now.
James,
Thanks for sharing man. I feel your situation. I have myself been in that situation and so have several friends on mine.
Clearly, your question doesn’t have a simple answer. The best I can do is to ask you a few more questions:
– Is your dream deeply alligned with your purpose and values (or said differently, does this dream strongly fit with who you are and want to be as a person)?
– Is it true that you’ll lose your relationships if you move? Would it not be possible to find a solution that would allow you to both follow your dream and keep your most important relationships?
– What feels right to you and why?
Thanks for such a fast reply, I really appreciate it.
To answer your questions, yes my dream is partially aligned with who I want to be and what values I want to guide my life but not all of them, one of these values being neglected would be family values. I have reflected on this quite a bit and the truth is I have a small amount of very strong relationships which could work over long distances.
As of late I’m beginning to wonder if it’s just fear, fear of not belonging, fear of not reaching my goal, fear of reaching my goal and realising that there were more important things in life and fear of not living up to all my values. I’m not really sure what to do and I know it is very hard to achieve all your values. I appreciate all the guidance your giving me, thanks again.
James,
Thanks again for sharing.
Leaving strong relationships behind is something I’d be fearful of. Having said that, if the relations are strong then my experience is that distance doesn’t matter that much. You’ll visit your people frequently right? They’ll visit you frequently too right? You’ll video chat with them, use Facebook, Snapchat and other great ways to stay in touch too right?
If so then I think distance can work but if you’re never going to return of course this is a massive decision.
Would you be ok with sharing what your dream is James?
What a truly inspiring post!
Mark Twain once said: “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”
I believe life is a dream, when we wake up, it becomes a story. We keep asking what dream we want to live in, but what stories we want to tell. Find your stories, and you might find yourself living in the dream everyday.
Stefan,
Thanks for your kind words and that quote from Mark Twain.
I like your perspective on life. Personally, I tend to tell myself:
“This is what life is Bjarte, this, right here, right now. Living isn’t about the future or the past but about the present”.
It can be hard to think like that sometimes but I find it valuable. I guess you can relate to that too Stefan.
I am the owner of the website:
http://permanentlife.club
As the inventor of completely automated Universal Permanent Software, I believe that the two most important things in life is happiness and permanence. I believe in the importance of happiness rather than that of intelligence because I doubt that humans are designed for intelligence, from my experience in introducing post-science, of which I am the founder.
what about permanence?
Very few things are permanent in a world which is full of change.
Those that we like that are we cherish; sometimes we have to let some go to move forward to have new experiences…some of these will be good some not so much.
If you don’t like the square your on move…however this is best done by age 30 after this it becomes more difficult due to comitments and perceptions of others it’s easier to adjust while young and recover from mistakes than when you are older
after I read this the facts are so true, only if you are disabled through parryless or long term illnesses there are challenges you can reach, after a uni
compartment in my knee and a 4tj and naviculor fusion too my foot, I still believe that in may I will complete a cycle challenge may not be forty miles but even if I start with ten the ambition too believe in myself is there… good health to you all…
Thanks Jennifer :)
I publish a monthly magazine in Southern Alberta – I was hoping you would allow me to share some of your information in the magazine for our January Issue. If you would like to view the magazine go to http://www.thenewsyneighbour.ca
Thanks so much and let me know.
You are awesome!
That would be an honor Kathryn and I’d appreciate a reference to this site and the specific article in question :)
Thanks for your interest in spreading the message.
If you could send an email to my address and give me your mailing address I will send you the January magazine in which I will be using quotes from your “The most important things in life” article. We all struggle sometimes with what is important and your article was inspiring to me.

Oh please… Spare me
Consider yourself spared :-)
There is something about a new year that makes me re-evaluate the direction my life is taking, and I’m sure it’s the same for many others. I agree with everything you said, and thank you so much for sharing this with everyone. Now to do that most difficult part- live by these guidelines, and analyze them daily.
Thank you Ashley.
I agree it can be hard and yet just being conscious of these four things will automatically lead to changes I think.
I wish you a lovely 2014 and I’m looking forward to hearing more about your journey :)
Spot on Mr. Bakke!
Thoroughly enjoyed your article! I am at a crossroad in my life, lost both parents recently, have a wonderful family with two adorable children, created a successful business; one would think, what on earth do you have to be unhappy or unfulfilled about. But that is seemingly the current situation. This article brought to the forefront that I am not currently living my purpose (which is helping others thrive in business, work and life), and the need to get back to the “basics” you outlined eloquently. It’s an odd enigma of how one can help others so much easier than helping themselves. Happy New Year!
B. Laughinghouse, thanks so much for sharing from your life. I’m sorry about your parents, it must have been hard to lose them both in a short period if time.
I can relate to your purpose and it would be great to hear more about your reflections and experiences going forward.
Take care :)
Thanks so much for such a nice, thought-provoking post. i am actually in a valley of decision in my life now, where am finding it difficult to really decide on what, where & how,… as things has not being going the way i thought. @ times i even think its useless to dream. however i’ll give your post a thought….. i like it.
hope to communicate with you more.
Petadez,
Thanks a lot for your feedback. Would you mind sharing with us what kind of decisions you are facing?

And I can’t wait for you to tell us about your journey Edvin :)
This entire article is just full of gooey platitudes.
The truth is that we do not figure out what is important or truly meaningful in life until we hit bottom.
It may take a loss of a job or an illness to truly reach that point.
Contentment is often very elusive. To come up with a recipe for contentment that applies to all or even most people is foolish.
Thanks for your comment jon. I agree that there probably exist people who don’t feel these four things are the most important to them.
I don’t think it’s necessary to hit rock bottom until we understand what’s most important to us but I would agree that hitting rock bottom can lead to important insights about who we are and what’s truly important to us.
your ideas are great…. but everyone might not be agree to you. the basic is you have found your purpose and also helped us find ours …thanks
Fiza, thanks for your comment. We all have different genes and life experiences; no wonder we don’t all have the same opinions :)

When I was a boy I tried to fix my bike. I needed a hammer but couldn’t find one. In the end I found a hefty pair of mole grips. I proceeded to bash the daylights out of my pedal cotta-pin. My Dad came out and said “what are you doing that for”. He then told me I would ruin the mole grips because they were not designed to be used as a hammer, they have been designed for another purpose.
What is the most important thing? Surely it is to fulfil the purpose for which we were made. We cannot do that without knowing our creator. Sure we can invent ideas about our purpose – but at best we will be like those mole-grips. A hammer can also be used for all sorts of things, but it is designed for something. The same is true for us. If we want to know what is our purpose, we need to know our designer.
If we come up with our own ideas, they may seem to work well, and it is certainly good not to harm others – I love the philosophy of the writer of the post above, but we cannot know if what feels good and seems good really is good. The above philosophy is good as far as it goes, but it does fall short of the most important thing. The most important thing is to be reconciled to our maker and designer so that we can fulfil His purpose which is to glorify Him (that is, be absolutely blown away by His love, majesty, power, grace etc) and we do this by truly enjoying Him forever.
Julian,
Thanks for your interesting thoughts. I respect that living according to the purpose given to us by God is the most important thing for religious people. When writing this post I decided against including religion as a specific component. Instead, I reasoned that the “Purpose, Values and Dreams” part would cover religious beliefs for those who hold them important.
Also, thank you for your nice words about the philosophy of the post. Most appreciated.

Jesus said if you deny me I will deny you before my father. What is wrong with America today is we have forgotten where we came from and all our forefathers did for us. We should never deny or be ashamed of who we were created to be, or who created us. America needs to wake up and we need as Believers to come out of the closet. What is so great about America is the American people and we cannot forget who we are, committed to the will of God. The bible gives us the definition of who we are. If we read the word of God we will find we were wonderfully made but we are a nation gone adrift. The fractured family overworked moms, parents resenting children and so people do not know who they are. Gangs they only want families. Gods judgement is on this nation if we don’t repent and turn from our wicked ways. May God heal our land and us as individuals. It first starts with us. Let us search and try our ways and turn aqain to the Lord. Prayer is for the healing of our nation and souls. If we want change in our lives we must turn to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Elaine Hanson
Hi Elaine,
It would have been great to have met Jesus and to have experienced how he was like. Personally, I don’t know how the Universe was created but I do believe in the importance of community and being good to others. Wouldn’t it be great if the whole of humanity could collaborate towards making the lives of all living beings better? :)
I agree that many in our nation, America, have wandered far astray from the Bible’s teachings, and are paying an inestimable price for the shortcoming. We are subsidizing Planned Parenthood, which really doesn’t “help” women with health care problems, only with committing abortions. When a governments assists in killing their underprivileged innocents, it is clearly on a tragic path. Our traditional family unit is now mocked by the media as “old-fashioned” and “corny”, but the sons and daughters raised by well-meaning single parents find their estranged children committing school shootings and other horrific crimes and ask “Why?”. The Reverend Billy Graham answered this question many years ago, and kept on answering it. Only God can save this country. NOT gun control. Not more laws. Not another President. Prayer and God can save us all. HUGS
Finally, Truth that matters, In fact the most important truth ever spoken….. John 3:16 If you leave GOD out of anything all you have is words
This is stupid list.
Sue, I think it’s an important list but your opinion is your opinion. Thanks for dropping by :)
I believe this really is one of the most significant info for me personally.

Hi everyone – especially Bjarte,
I feel like the French lady Meriem. I have really hit the rock bottom now. Travelled the world, met people, made money, lost money, lost loved ones…..Now completely on my own. After 8 years living in three different European countries I am back in the country I love most (though I wasn’t born in here) – Australia. I am having a very hard time “finding myself” again – born “helper”, but not being able to help myself – ANYONE?! LOL. Anyway – I could write forever. I would like to thank you for such wisdom. I am probably twice your age (judging by your tiny pic), being around the block a few times…..etc BUT you helped me a lot with your blog!!! Thanks a million, man. Keep in touch. I think we both would benefit from our connection. I feel a good connection regarding our views and values. Thanks again. George
George,
Great to hear from you. Sounds like you are an adventurous guy, exciting! I’m glad you like the blog and if there’s anything more I can do let me know. Also, staying in touch sounds nice; I’ve never even been to Australia!
Hi Bjarte. Thank you for your nice reply. I just have to tell you that TODAY IS MY DAY!!! I had a bit of a health issue and just got my test results today. I am OK!!! You have no idea (you probably do) how that feels. Thought of mortality were on my mind for the last three weeks – not much sleep there. As I have mentioned, many unfortunate things and events happened to me in past. I am nearly broke (financially), BUT I am not broken!!! And that feels so damn good. I am on my way now – no matter what. I feel very good. This is another start. Back home in Oz, recovering and keep fighting. I will win!!! Keeps in touch man and thank you
Keep it up George, seems like you’re on the right track! Regards from Brazil :)

Thank you Bjarte, you made my day, recalled the good things that once I read and tried to follow from the book See You At the Top by zig ziglar. You are a good inspirational writer as you have the power to make a long slept person awake and walk in the right direction.
Syed,
Thanks a lot for your kind words. In fact, I just bought the book you referred to as I haven’t read it yet. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to be of assistance.

Loved your post. Am in Uganda and a youngman of 20 years, and am glad to know the most important things in life at such an age , things that even some old people dont know. You know most people are too busy with life that they even forget the most important things in Life. Thanx alot. I would love to keep in touch with you via my email coz ive got lots of philosophy to discuss
Dear Opio,
I’m glad you found the article helpful. It would be a pleasure to stay in touch. In fact, I’m going to Kigali in August which isn’t too far away from Uganda I believe :)
Take care and regards from Brazil,
Bjarte
I would also like to know the various ways through which i can improve on my self esteem
Pls how can I be a great person, is it by working hard, or by reading hard, or wat, because I want to be a great person to my self to my family, to everyone around me.
live like one
this is ur writing ” I’m not saying life can’t be good if we’re sick, disabled or have other health challenges. ” i’m not agree with these because if a person is disable or paralyze and need 1 or 2 persons to take care of him then what is use of life and i know one boy he is badly disabled cannot move and all the family is involved with him to do……… anyway the other things you wrote it’s interesting. thankU
Jan, thanks for your comment.
I respect your views. Still, I think it’s possible to live a good life even though you have disabilities. I think Stephen Hawkins is an interesting example. I don’t know how he would personally rate his life, but from an outside perspective there’s little doubt that he at least has made significant scientific discoveries. I’m not saying that means he’s had or is living a good life, I just think that disabilities or bad health doesn’t pr. definition mean that you can’t live a good life.
Regards from Brazil,
Bjarte

I want your suggestion. I am great distress financially. My better half had affair with another person, physical which hurts me most. My children do not respect me for my misbehave.
Hi and apologies for the late reply. I am currently researching while traveling the world but that’s no excuse.
I am very sad to hear about your situation. It’s not nice to experience such an event and that there’s financial trouble and kids issues too must make things very hard for you. If you’re reading this, how is your situation right now? Remember, with some time and effort any situation can be turned around!

I feel somewhat the same, but the no 1 thing most important above all is to help others who need help, and to help make other peoples lives better before our own.I read one guys comment wealth is important, amassing great wealth is crap unless you help others with it….you need money to live dont live for money.
Hi Erik, nice comment. Yes, I agree helping others is a great thing. In fact, I think life at its absolute most fundamental is about feeling good, doing good and creating a legacy. Relationships, self-worth, health and purpose/values/dreams are key factors in living by these three fundamentals,
Thank you for sharing, i think it is also so important the sense of knowing you are not alone in this one. There are many amazing people that are truly inspiring and giving sense of hope and making the positive waves… I will share and pass this great article to my friends, was very touched to read it and really felt every word.
Thank you for creating it for us, people.
Thank you very much for your nice words Marie Su. I hope your friends will enjoy the article as much as you did :)
“Life’s greatest opportunity is kindness.” – me
Nicely said Jerry. Would you say kindness is a type of love or is love a type of kindness?
Hmm….I wonder what came first?….Love?, or Kindness?
OK, just a tiny bit of humor there.
For me, kindness is a type of Love. However, Love is one those words that can mean so many things to so many people. Culture, education, and parental nurturing just to name a few are real factors in how we perceive Love.
Having said that, I believe that kindness is an act of Love. Whether you love someone or not, to show kindness is to show love.
Here’s one of my favorite quotes…
“Love is best shown than spoken”
Nice article.
I many times asked myself these questions, ” what is important in life ? OR what is the meaning of life? Why we are born, grow young, then older, then die?, why all this is happening?”
I find your views interesting and useful. In addition to the list you have (health, relationships, positive attitude & views/thoughts) I have one other area which I would like to explore. May be I can call it “spiritual”. I find the mind/thoughts and its working quite interesting.
Our views do change with time and experience. Wish to hear from you if you have some additions/improvements to this list. Thanks.
Rao, thanks for sharing your insights.
Since I first created this post about two years ago I’ve been working on a more complete “what’s important in life” theory. It’s not done yet and I still stand by what I’ve written in this post, although I perhaps would have made some adjustments.
With regards to the “spiritual” dimension it’s an interesting one. I enjoy and respect Eastern philosophy and I’d be interested in how you personally define “spiritual” Rao?
Take care,
Bjarte
WOW! WoW! Awesome! really inspirational about life. i asked myself these questions, what actually i am doing in my life? what are the most important things in my life? I find your post is really valuabel and useful. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Sudip! Your comment made my day :-)
Hello, I’m from Mongolia. I couldn’t sleep in my bed because of many worrying thoughts about my current life. I have a lack of perseverance. I think it’s because I haven’t life purpose, so that I live by expectations of others. Everytime when I’m in difficult situations, I feel life is meaningless, and I’m starting to think what is the life purpose, why I was born in this world. But until now I couldn’t find the answer. But your post opened my eyes, gave me idea and, right now my worries are gone. I’m very grateful for you.
Tulgaa, I am very grateful for your comment. Next time I’m near by Mongolia we should meet up and talk about life!
Hey man, You are so so so awesome…. You are so right !!!! I love your thoughts…. I’m so thankful for your post, it sort of help to refocus and orient… Good job brother,
Thanks Igor! :-)
Hi Bjarte,
Great Post!
If I may, I’d like to add one of my favorite “most important things in life ” ideas to this post.
I have long believed that one only needs two things in life to be happy. 1. Your health, (Which encompass’s a wide range of needs to be met), and 2. At least one person who loves you. Simple idea, but when think about it. These two things are all you need to be happy. All the other things in life are bonus’s. For myself, I have been blessed with many bonus’s. Now, I’m not saying you can’t be happy without good health, or love. I’m saying that, if you do have your health and love in your life, you have no reason not to be happy.
As for your perspective on “living in the present”, I couldn’t agree with you more my friend. Many years ago, I spent so much of my time dwelling on the past, and worrying about the future, I forgot to live the day. I got so wrapped up in what I needed to do, and all that everyone else wanted me to do, to a point where, I spent most of my time trying to catch up with what I didn’t get done yesterday, or what I have to do tomorrow. In short, I have come to realize how important the “NOW” really is. It’s not that my responsibilities, or my work load have changed. It is my perspective that has changed. I often say to myself…“Today is the Day”! Today is always “The Day”. Today is the day to do what I did yesterday better. Today is the day to enjoy loving and being loved. Today is the opportunity to become more than who I am. Today is really the only day we have. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow isn’t here yet. From this perspective I have gained an appreciation for each and every day. At times, it comes down to just hours, minutes, or even seconds. Where as just a few seconds of the day, made the day! We all have experienced those moments at one time or another. However, I believe that each day can have those moments. No doubt, some days will have less meaningful moments than others, but meaningful nonetheless. Once I got this….Instead of just living FOR the day, I started LIVING the day.
Have Nice Day! :)
Nice one Robert! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Seems like you’ve made some important discoveries. Enjoy your day man :-)
Ty. I’m a 20 year old male student from Australia who has experience tough situations in the past few years that has left me lost in who i am and this post really helped me recover. I also believe that one must base themselves on good morals to help guide them with their dreams and obtain what is valuable to themselves.
Agreed Jayden. Key point.
ALL WE NEED IS GOD!! HE WILL PROVIDE EVERYTHING WE NEED. Trust and share His love.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS LIFE IS death.
I agree
TRUE! reminding yourself that you’re going to die gives you an indescribable feeling of life. life is nothing in the face of death.

Interesting way of looking at it :) Thinking about the fact the we will die is valuable I think, however I don’t think death should be the most important thing in our lives.
I love this!!!I really want to stay consistent in thinking nothing but positive and empowering things, I find it difficult at times. This article is amazing life is beautiful and I need to focus more on what’s important :)
Melissa, thanks for your nice words! Yes, it can be hard sometimes and yet focusing on what truly matters is powerful.

I found your post when looking for info on “the most important thing” for my definition of justice. Working for justice is providing an equitable chance for everyone to achieve what is meaningful and helping to remove roadblocks. This may not be a well thought out complete definition but I strongly believe that actions that deny anyone else from achieving a meaningful life are unjust. My first list is Survival, Purpose, Relationships, Pleasure. Yours seems more well thought out though.
hi
people
how u doin
Learning and growing how are you?
If narrowed down to one single answer, more important than G-d, love or family, or even your choices, it would have to be HOPE. For without hope, nothing has any meaning. Think about any choice you might make, if there is not hope, life BECOMES meaningless.
Yes, not having hope certainly makes life suck.
Hope keeps you going however ask yourself are you realistic in your “quest”?
Hope is an important feeling. :)
Nobody knows the destination of life still I agree these things are essential to live the life.
You worded the title wrong.
It should have read the most important things ‘to do’ in life.
The answer to the most important thing(s) in life is life is most important in life.
That is the most important truth in life.
We derive our importance and equality from this mist important self-evident truth.
The evidence is clear that this correct, as we cannot challenge this truth without using life. That would be hypocrisy (lying).
Thanks for that David. I do like to focus on what to do, yes. And I think it’s vital to understand the “why” behind our actions. Why do we want what we do? Is our desire our own or is it a dangerous consequence of our societies?
For me, 3 things that would simplify your life. 1. Good Health , 2. Financial Freedom ( Debts free) 3. Social Works or Charities
Yes, I too feel these are important. Thanks for sharing Vic.
Thank you for writing this. I needed a wakeup call. This did it. Im so inspired! Keep up the great writing!
Great stuff Jessica! We all need wake-up calls. :)
is it possible that if we are given priority about 4 thing its make us happy ?
Kemal, I think that spending time on these four things will lead to a great life. :)
Not necessarily….things will happen in your life that you have no control over….some decisions will not be good ones…however if you set Plan B or C with realistic goals and boundaries life may be better than without these
Dear Bjarte,
You are making the real difference needed in the world.
When you show people the right paths to follow, then you are really caring for them.
Your writing must have made some people cry as it touches the real pain that most of us experience all the times.
The blessing thing about your article is that, showing people how to detect their long lasted pains and how to cure them which is a blessing you should be accredited for.
Keep capitalising on these items and I assure you a blessing life.
You are a gifted change architect.
God bless you.
Thanks Omer! Where are you from man?
The most important things in life are peace and submission.
Peace; so that we can live instead of surviving. Submission; to God, universe, destiny, life and death.

Hello. Uhm, I don’t know what to write but I feel like I need to write something. I’ve basically spent all of this day crying and feeling so lost. I found your article in an attempt to find advice and comfort because I cannot have any of that in real life right now. I’m Peruvian but right now I’m living in Japan. Such a big change, isn’t it? I’ve always wanted to come and make a life here. It was my dream. My parents met here in Japan and I was born here too but they got divorced and mom went back to Peru with me, and my father stayed. Now after almost 18 years I’m back again but… I’m not happy. It’s been 4 months and I still feel like I’m missing something. My family actually. I miss my mom so much. I miss her and my little brother and my grandparents, my cousins… I miss my home. Even though I’m living with my father now, it just cannot compare. I wouldn’t have imagined just how emotionally draining dealing with my father is. It was already hard when we were apart. My mom has always been more than a mother to me. She’s been like a best friend. I could tell her anything, we could do stuff together and have a really good time. She’s been by my side since I have memory. She’s never failed to be there. And then my little brother came. And it was all so wonderful but I wanted to come. I wanted to come to Japan so much that sometimes I cried thinking that I wouldn’t be able to. I feel so frustrated. I’m finally here but all I want to do is go back to my family in Peru. Here I’m not me. Here I’m afraid of giving my opinion, points of view, joking, or simply being my silly and cheerful self. Cuz whatever I might say, anything, may set my father off. I’m afraid of him. Here I’m the well behaved daughter, following orders and agreeing with everything he says. I just listen and nod. I feel like a robot. He wants me to change my personality. Like how I get really excited when I see something I really like, I jump a bit, smile like mad. He says it’s ridiculous. He doesn’t respect my likings. And he’s such an attention seeker. Seeing as his wife won’t even give him the time of the day, he calls for me so often that it gets so tiring, no kidding. Any little mistake will make him explote. Right now he’s practically ignoring me and making me feel like s*it. I don’t know what to do anymore. I really miss my family so much. Their support and how carefree I felt with them. There’s this part in your article that has left such an impression on me: *The purpose of my life is to feel good, be good and do good.* I’m not feeling good. Haven’t feel completely good since I arrived. I’ve been good and done good in Peru… why did I leave again? I feel lost. Also about what are the things I’m spending most of my time on and why.. the only thing it comes to my mind is that most of my time is spend on my dad. Helping him with work, listening to his rants, his complains about everything really, his lectures, always agreeing and nodding, saying he’s right. And the reason I do that is because I’m afraid of him. I’ve always been. I’ve come to realize that the most important thing in my life is my family in Peru. I feel torn. I want to pack my bags and leave right away but I also don’t want to because I’d feel like a failure. I’m finally here for God’s sake, I’ve got until September of this year before my visa expires and I got to renew it again… what should I do? Sometimes I think Japan isn’t worth how empty I feel most of the time. I’m really sorry for rating like this and making such a long comment but I just had to get this off my chest. Any advice you could give me, I’d appreciate. This article has helped me a bit, I feel a bit better, thank you.
Brenda, how are you getting on? Did you read the book?
Brenda….I have been where you are now…and I returned to family however it wasn’t the same…eventually my mother and I moved to where my brother is…. It’s better than my ” home town” and has lots to offer beaches Mts and entertainment…this is my home now and love living here…my best friends live 1 to 1.5 hrs way…
I have my dog to who is a great friend …it would be nice to have a girlfriend….however small population …
This is a great area…so I won’t leave…NSW Australia
Maybe you should make a list of what is important in Japan and what is important in Chile…Write it on paper give each a score out of ten then add up score for each and you will know where is best for you…wish you the best in your decission
Brenda maybe you could go back and see you mum and brother for a holiday and that may make the decission easier …their must have been a good reason for going to Japan however maybe you did not realise what you would miss you other family members so much…tell me how long have you been in Japan?
I lived away from” home”… 2.5 years don’t regret going but really pleased to be where I am now….have been here 10 yrs now cheers Allan
I have no words for this article. simply Wonderful.
This is the best thing I’ve read .
Thanks for your words Divya, you made me smile. :)
OK so I’m a moron because I didn’t list the four things in life ….( which I believe is way to simplistic )…
1 a great partner / friend ( way too simoplistic
2 Job ( description how to find?)
3 right location ( now there’s much to consider)
4 Friends ( mutual trust respect interests )
5….( 4 is not enough)
Family
6 Keeping away from overcrritical morons
7…..yes health is very important you can have the rest but if you don’t have that your ” stuffed”

Yeah there’s spelling mistakes on I phone ….bet your an A type personality …chill out

What does religion have to do with the kind of reality that people are able to see.
Life is everyone concerns so it is good to be discuss always to educates us that find ourselves in poverty.
Most important and influential long term is power. Everyone uses power. We are dependent on it for our modern way of life. Without any kind of power we would be in the stone age or worse. More than about 20000 years ago all humans had for power was muscle of our own bodies and maybe dogs. Then horses and other beasts of burden. 10000 years ago we added burning of biomass such as grass, wood then peat and coal. During the last 4000-5000 we added animal fat, then oils from plants. The last few hundred years we added again more sources from the natural world in the form of whale oil and finally petroleum oil and natural gas associated with petroleum. The last 150 years we added electricity dynamos turned by turbines running on steam. The last 50 -60 years we saw nuclear power start to be introduced in the form of fission. Now fusion is being research. Along the way other forms of power such as hydro, wind and solar showed up. Now cold fusion and or Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR) has been confirmed by many sources. Several companies are manufacturing the first commercial version. The most advance seems to be Leonardo Corporation and their energy catalyzer, Brillouin has a less advanced version and BrightLight is a close third. LENR is non-polluting as compared to all other forms of power. LENR is also many times cheaper than any other form of energy, on the order of one-tenth of a cent per kilowatt-hour and has the potential to be totally free after installation costs in a few more years as compared to the next cheapest at 5 five cents per kilowatt hour. It is not being announced in the main media as is its due because of the put down it experienced from vested interests in 1989 until now, 2016. 20th International Conference on Condensed Matter Nuclear Science in Sendai, Japan will show what progress is currently being made in that field.

this was great. thanks a million. just what I needed it when I needed it.
Thanks Jim! :)
Thanks Jim.
I feel sorry . I am reading the article too late. But this was best article I have ever read.
Till now most of the time I used to study study and study. I every time thought that enjoying is all wastage of time and important is studying ,working hard.
I used to pay no attention on my relations , joy etc.
But after reading and understanding it I came to know the importance of joy in life .my life no more be boring from now .
The best point I liked of yours is ‘self view’ which was completely lacking in me.
And from tomorrow’s morning I will start a new life full of joy , passing time with family , playing with my brother etc.
This article changed my life and thanks for such a wonderful article. Now I came to the importance of life , now I came to know only studying is not every thing because in end of life we are gonna die. So why not to live a joyful life.
Thanks again for the article and please can you give a daily routine of yours on my e mail Id.
Please keep on writing such wonderful articles.
Thank you Naval for your kind message. It warms. I think many of us have become unconsciously obsessed with pleasure, money, and status and have forgotten what life is really about. Life is a journey of world- and self-discovery. To live like that we must both be open to the world and listen to our inner compass.
This is such a stunning article to be read. Most of the description here hit me so right. Thanks for keeping us in the right truck for some time when you get lost what we are living for.

What an exceptional blog. Congratulations on having the #1 Google search result for “the most important thing in life.”
I’ve been skimming and reading, now, for half an hour. Good stuff. I’ve got breakfast ideas and what appears to be several thousand words on high performance life stuff to read as soon as I can make time to slow down and consume it properly. Definitely feel a connection to this one.
Any chance you have an email subscription somewhere around here I’m not seeing? I’d really like to get this sort of uplift delivered to my inbox as it becomes available.
Thanks.
Brian, thanks for your comment. I don’t have a newsletter these days. I spend my time on building the DietDoctor.com company now but will try to improve RethinkingTruth and post more this year.
Your views are very close to those of Socrates. This makes me happy and sad at the same time… Because the truths or life were there 2,400 years ago to grasp, and there are here to grasp now, just one needs to think a bit, and forget what the others try to convince him about.
Thank you for this little contribution to humanity. It’s just a drop in the ocean but after all, every ocean consists from such drops of water :).
Nice to hear from you.
I think about it like this: Human nature hasn’t changed much in 50,000 years. Therefore you’d expect the wise, ancient people to have discovered important truths about how to live. That’s nice.
The hard part is that we’re all born with an almost “empty” brain and each of us needs to re-learn this wisdom. The great part is that we can explore and discover more secrets and teach them to others.
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we made learning wisdom simple for people? Contributing to this is my biggest dream, why I work with DietDoctor.com and why I started this blog. I think we have the tools necessary to spread wisdom it to every corner of the world so let’s do it. :)
Wao I most say I am bless by this wonderful article of yours,it has really open my eyes and given me a sense of direction on what life is all about. Thank you so much for this.
Glad you liked it Romeo

I am currently a college student trying to figure out what it is I want to study. I want to be a teacher but everyone I know, even my mother and father, tells me that I should aspire to be more. They all say I will not like being a teacher and that I should go for a higher paying job. It’s hard to make my own decisions when nobody backs me up. I don’t know what the right choice is. What do you all think? This decision will definitely have a profound impact on my life.
the most important thing in life is believing in yourself first before anyone else can
find your happiness through challenges
life is full of challenges
the number one thing that everyone should want in life is happiness
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to write this article. Helped me in reconnecting with my purpose and goals for 2017. Thank you!
Wow, a very deep and thought provoking post, really appreciate it. I agree that these are the 4 most important things in life, it all boils down to happiness, health, wealth and relationships for me :) btw, I have many of the same mentors/influencers as you :)
Came across this post after I asked my phone what the most important thing I’m life was. After reading it along with the first 30 or so comments I can tell you with absolutely certainty that money is the most important thing. Anyone who tells it differently has never experienced true poverty. I’m not talking about having a low paying job or struggling to pay your car insurance I’m talking about downtown Skid Row type stuff. I’m talking about the things most pepole only see in the movies. You think your beer football buddy is gping to follow along with that? Think again.
I would suggest to do what you feel empowers you and not concern yourself with the results.
I could really connect with all the ways that you listed and I find this article very empowering.
I liked all your points. It was quite stimulating and encouraging and full of truth to an extent. I was hoping also to find something that also speaks to the meaning of life beyond the grave. What’s the fight against death all about? Why does every ounce of energy we put toward being healthy to fight against death end in failure in the end. Why is suicide becoming more attractive? Does God exist and if such a being exists what is this Person like?
Each life is oh so valuable. If I did not have hope beyond the grave, I can’t imagine what my life would be. I can’t imagine life being worth living, not knowing my destiny. Everything I do, all the peace I have is because I have come to realize that the Bible is true, it is the north star of stability for myself and many others. Jesus Christ is the living light house who has given each of us life. But, we are all stuck on death row headed for an eternity without God and all his gifts, absent of life and health, alive forever but living in isolation and pain because we have rejected the One who gave us life and offered us eternal life through his suffering sacrifice. However, through belief in Him, in the fact that He died for our sins, our lives can be transformed into a life of meaning and purpose that begins now and extends beyond the grave. I think of a song that was sung at the funeral of a friend that died of cancer: “When it’s all been said and done, There is just one thing that matters, Did I do my best to live for Truth, when it’s all be said and done. Actually I just found that on you tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1llIIhBMCjU. I agree with prioritizing around health in every area: Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, starting with the spiritual. Then wisdom to do it all will come.
I appreciate the effort but very shallow egoistic points though. I know that these are important for YOU and everyone has their own important things in life. From general perspective, life purpose must be more than that.
I am agree
1. Health
2. Family
3. Knowledge
4. Dream
